 HOLIDAY SAFETY TIPS CANDLE SAFETY
Avoid using lit candles, but if you do use lit candles be sure to place them in
sturdy and stable candle holders. Also place them in a location where they can not
be easily knocked over.
Never leave candles burning when you are sleeping or not home
Never put lit candles on or near a tree
Do not use electric lights on a metallic tree, the tree can become charged
with electricity from faulty lights and a person who touches the tree
can be electrocuted.
HOLIDAY DECORATIONS
All decorations should be non-flammable or flame-retardant
Keep all decorations away from heat sources
Do not put wrapping paper in a fire place. This can result in a large fire and also sparks.
If you decide on an artificial tree, make sure it is flame retardant and away form heat sources.
LIGHTS
Inspect holiday lights for frayed wires, bare spots, gaps in the insulation, and broken
or cracked sockets. If lights have any of these problems discard them
and do not use them.
Don't overload electrical sockets.
All lights have a number of strands that can be plugged in to them, most are three.
Check your packages for how many strands is safe.
Connect strands to an electrical cord before plugging into an electrical outlet.
Check the wires periodically, the wires should never be hot to the touch.
Do not leave lights on unattended.
PREVENTING TREE FIRES
A live tree should have green needles and should be hard to pull back from the branches.
The trunk should be sticky to the touch.
If you bounce the tree on the ground and too many needles fall off, this is an
old tree and should not be used since it is probably dried out
and is now a fire hazard.
No not place a tree close to a heat source, heat will dry out a tree and cause it
to be a fire hazard.
Try to avoid putting the tree up too early and discard it within two weeks.
Keep the stand filled with water at all times.
When tree is ready to be discarded, either bring it to the local recycling center or find out when your local pick up will be. Never put it in a fire place.
Remember to check your smoke detectors and ensure they work
and have fresh batteries. .
